Why We Take Pre-Orders: Supporting Slow Luxury, Sustainability, and Thoughtful Craft

I believe in creating timeless knitwear with integrity, which is crafted to last, made with purpose and rooted in sustainability. Subsequently, I’m proud to be now able to offer pre-orders on selected designs throughout the year. These are the designs we manufacture in-house at our GS studio, alongside a few limited edition collections crafted in collaboration with our small, family-run mills across the UK.

But what exactly does ‘pre-order’ mean? How does it work? And why is it so important to both our brand and our values as a slow, luxury British knitwear brand?

Pre-ordering allows us to reserve a piece before it is made, ensuring that you receive your chosen design while giving us, as a small independent brand, the ability to plan and produce more consciously. By offering limited pre-order windows for new styles we can:

-       Knit the right sizes in the right quantities, minimising overstock.

-       Plan the time of our in-house knitters to balance craftsmanship with realistic lead times.

-       Order the exact amount of yarn we need, reducing material waste.

-       Support our in-house makers with clear, focused production schedules.

Every Genevieve Sweeney garment is thoughtfully designed, from the provenance of the yarns to the final hand-finished linking and detailing. Pre-orders help us to continue working with British spinners, preserve heritage knitting techniques, and maintain our dedication to exceptional quality and fit.

In a world dominated by fast fashion, the ability to pre-order your garments is a powerful act of mindful shopping. Waste is a huge problem in the fashion industry (around 92 million tonnes of textile waste is produced annually), and while pre-ordering doesn’t completely eliminate fabric waste, it does drastically reduce it as we’re only ordering as much yarn as we need and making as many garments as you’ve ordered. Changing the way you shop to pre-ordering garments that are made in limited runs is a vote for a more sustainable future where quality, not quantity, leads the way.

We also love how by choosing to pre-order, you become part of the story of the garments you purchase. You help to shape the collection and make a meaningful impact on how we produce. It also adds an exclusivity to the pieces you choose – that garment has been made especially for you and your wardrobe.

We will always have a core collection that is available to order straight away but we’re thrilled to offer this pre-order service for some of our bestselling styles. Designs like our oversized scarves sell out within a couple of weeks every year; pre-orders will help to avoid any disappointments when styles fly out before you’ve had a chance to order your favourite colour or design.

Ultimately, pre-orders not only help us to meet our sustainability goals, but also honour the craftsmanship and time that go into each piece we knit. It’s the future of sustainable and ethical fashion, and we’re thrilled to now be in a position where we can offer pre-orders.
