All About Our Best-Selling Samar Socks

Our Samar merino wool socks are one of our best-selling styles, available in argyle, striped and contrast trim designs in a wide variety of colours. They’re the perfect everyday sock that can be dressed up or down, adding a fun and playful punch of colour to any outfit. The ultimate sartorial sock, they’re a core piece of our collection, and I love dreaming up new colour combinations for them each season. To celebrate this much-loved sock, I thought I’d share a bit more about the design process and how they are made.

Knitted in our softest merino wool yarn spun to a signature GS marl, our Samar socks are perfect paired with any footwear from boots to trainers – I even love them worn with sandals in the summer to show off their colours in all their glory. These are no simple socks, however. My designs take time to develop, and there are many processes and in-depth decision-making involved with the story of these socks.

To begin, the yarn used for these socks is hand-twisted and selected by me. It’s a gut feeling to get the hues of the complex marl right – I like the colours to pop, but not to fade into one tone. Twisting the marls takes time, but is a process that I deeply enjoy. When selecting colours, I’m usually inspired by Mother Nature’s colour palette, and I love playing around with contrasting hues.

Once I’m happy with the marls, I visit my sock manufacturer and spend the day designing and developing on a machine, testing the colourful marls at the same time. I shadow my knitter, learning more and more with each visit. What really amazes me is watching the tweaking; just a simple change can make a huge difference to the finished pair of socks. The machines we knit on are old (they still use floppy disks!) but they are well looked after and run as if they were only a few years old.

The first Samar sock I launched was a simple marl design with contrasting toes, heel and trim. This classic design is now available in a rich array of hues, which I look forward to adding to each season. Due to the popularity of this design and how much everyone loved the merino marl, I subsequently launched the Samar stripe and Samar argyle designs. These socks bring a playful, modern twist to traditional socks with their block colour patterns bringing joy to the wearer. We offer exclusive colourways for our annual Christmas specials of our subscription service and inside our reusable Christmas crackers.
