Dating back thousands of years, the earliest known ‘socks’ were discovered in Egypt back in the 4th century AD – interestingly - designed with split toes to be worn with sandals, proving that socks and sandals were a vibe even then! The Greeks and Romans wrapped their feet in soft cloth and by the 16th century, ornate stockings were seen as the mark of wealth and status in European nobility.

By the end of that century in 1589, the first knitting machine was invented for the sole purpose of making socks!
