It’s time to announce the second of my new limited edition designs (the first was our triangle scarf, which you can read about here). A little recap: I’ve recently acquired my very own knitting machine, which will allow me to launch limited editions more often, without having to commit to larger batches. For this particular scarf, the yarn is fairly expensive, so we decided to launch it as a limited edition to gauge interest in the new design. The Fawn and Indigo sold out in record time!
For a while, I have wanted to design a lightweight scarf that is perfect for warm summer days and for taking with you on your travels. Crafted from lightweight and breathable merino wool, this blanket-style scarf is designed to be the ultimate multi-purpose piece for your summer wardrobe. Envelop yourself in its warm yet light fabric while travelling, drape it over your shoulders to cover up elegantly at a summer wedding, or wrap up on cooler evenings for walks on the beach or al fresco drinks. It’s the perfect companion for everything from windy walks on the beach to golden mornings sipping your coffee outdoors.
Designed and made in our GS studio in Hertfordshire, this lovingly crafted scarf is the second design to be knitted in-house by us. Due to its oversized silhouette, it takes a long time to knit, but it’s a process that I greatly enjoy. I use three stitches of knit, purl and garter in a geometric pattern inspired by Bauhaus textiles, which I enlarged for a subtle yet detailed finish. I took my time knitting, testing and developing to get the stitch right; this is one of my favourite parts of the process of creating a new design, and it’s a wonderful moment when it all comes together. I played with different stitch techniques, including pointelle, but this proved to be too time-consuming, over-doubling the time spent knitting the scarf. I considered reducing the amount of pointelle but found that it didn’t show off the beautiful characteristics of the yarn in the same way as the purl and garter stitch did.
As for the yarn, it’s a naturally dyed merino wool. I love using natural dyes, not only because they’re environmentally friendly, but I also love the creativity of creating colour from natural resources. This scarf is available in a choice of three colours: dusty rose pink (madder root – the tone is dependent on factors including the soil where the root was grown), indigo (fermented leaves give a beautiful deep blue shade) and driftwood (natural tones from dried hawthorn leaves). The textured stitch pattern really shows off the beauty of these natural colours.
