Chatting Ageless Style with Hannah MacLeod of Graham St.

Hannah MacLeod has been working as a stylist for over a decade, alongside running her blog and Instagram, Graham St. Dedicated to closing the generation gap in the British fashion industry, Hannah and her equally chic mum share their outfits and styling tips, proving that a great sense of style is truly ageless. We caught up with Hannah recently to chat about everything from ageless style to how to elevate your outfit with a humble pair of socks.

We love your focus on closing the generation gap in fashion. What are your core beliefs when it comes to getting dressed?

First and foremost you must be comfortable.  It is very tricky to look stylish if you are uncomfortable in what you are wearing.  Comfort should come in two ways: physically comfortable and comfort with the aesthetic. In other words, don't worry about current trends if they don't sit comfortably with you.

How do you personally, and can we all tackle ageism in the fashion industry?

Just wear what you love and what makes you feel good.  Don't worry about age.

What advice can you offer and what wardrobe staples would you suggest adding to your repertoire to achieve a timeless, ageless style?

Work on the 'boring stuff' first.  So take time to find a great pair of jeans, lovely tailored trousers, really good quality t-shirts and shirts, and then once you have the foundations in place, you can add finesse with beautiful knitwear, coats and accessories!  Also, buy the best quality pieces that you can afford.  They will look and last better for longer.

Do you and your mum borrow and swap clothes with each other? Or do you own any matching pieces?

We have similar taste, but mum generally prefers a more pared back, timeless look whereas I go for bolder choices. This isn't due to our ages though, this is due to our personalities and personal preferences.

What or who are both yours and your mum's style inspirations?

I generally take inspiration from the people that I see out and about in the world. I love going to East London just to sit in a cafe and people watch. People watching abroad is the BEST though. Mum probably takes her inspiration from me – ha!

What are both of your favourite knitwear pieces for a capsule wardrobe?

We love a cardigan for its versatility.  A cardigan can be worn done up as a jumper or undone with a top underneath.  They're also extremely useful during the summer months when you're never quite sure what the weather is going to do.

We love how every aspect of your outfits is carefully considered. Do you have any pointers for how you choose socks to elevate your outfits?

Put on your socks last!  Pick a colour in your outfit (often one of the most subtle ones) and wear socks in that colour.

You share a love of St Albans and its antique markets with Genevieve – do you have any tips for where to get the best coffee, where to eat lunch, where to shop etc.?

I like Nkora for coffee, Hatch or TOAST for brunch, The Courtyard cafe for lunch (and cake) and Tabure or Hazéls for dinner.  Oh and for a sweet treat at any time of the day The Pudding Stop!!
